Adaptation

Concrete Angel
Martina Mcbride

Emily the only child of the family would get herself up and ready for school each day. She would put on the same clothes as she had worn yesterday and pack a lunch and would be off to school. Emily would try as hard as she could to hide the pain and brusies she had but it didnt work. The teachers, students, and neighbors all noticed but never did anything about it. In the halls kids would say, " Hey Emily didnt you wear that outfit yesterday and the day before that." All the kids would began to laugh and stare at Emily.

The teasing from the children was nothing compared to the pain she had to endure from her beatings at home. Emily would walk slowly home from school fearing what lies ahead. Each time she would enter the door she would head for her room but she would never make it there. Her dad would be there waiting for her at the end of the hall way with a can of beer in his hand and a glazed look in his eyes. He would say, "Emily" with a slur.
She would look away and then he would get angry.

"Yes sir" Emily would respond and then begin her chores. She scrubed the dishes with all her might knowing it would never be good enough for her father. She was terrified when she heard his foot steps coming towards her. He picked up a dish and said it was dirty and threw it on the floor breaking it into tiny pieces. "Look at what you have done" exclaimed her dad as he began to beat her.

"You are an idot, stupid, and lazy" her dad would say. Although these words pierced her soul she would escape to a place in her mind where she could be loved. Her thoughts would be interupted with shouts from her father. "Go do the dishes and when your finished scrub the floor and do the laundry."

"Please stop" Emily whimperd but her pleas were not heard. The neighbors heard but chose to shut their windows. This would be the last night for screams and bruises because her little body could take no more. She escaped to a place of stone angels where she could rest in peace.

Grand Theft Poetry

The Dash of Life
Gravestones on the hill,
so many names,
so many lives,
gone.
It's not the date of birth
or of death
that matters.
It's the dash engraved between
death and birth that counts the most.
How do we choose to fill our dash
of life?
With sadness and fear,
or happiness and peace.
With meaningful relationships,
or bitterness and loneliness.
Will we have regrets
and unfulfilled dreams,
or will we have accomplished
our hearts desires.
Gravestones on the hill
marking life's lost,
but not erasing memories
left behind.
